Commitment to Diversity
At my school, there is a rich diversity of people, thoughts, ideas, and interests. Through Imua, we have the unique opportunity to explore all of these facets of diversity. During pitch meetings and Talk Stories, I advocate for articles that provide a fresh perspective on our school and its students, or focus on topics with local, national, or international significance. I actively collaborate with students to refine their interview questions and angles, encouraging them to consider diverse viewpoints. To ensure they thoroughly explore each topic, I often give them additional words or pages, allowing them to fully develop their ideas and perspectives.
We've covered a wide range of subjects, from body hair stigma to the introduction of a new Korean language course, and from the history of saimin to promoting sustainability through thrifting clothes. While our school is very diverse, we also take pride in critically examining its past in order to move forward. For example, we used to be called the “Red Raiders,” a term that is derogatory towards Native Americans. We chose to cover this part of our history because it is important for our community to understand the implications and insensitivity it had towards other groups. In reporting on this, I assisted the writer by researching materials in the archives and working with information found online to ensure a thorough and accurate portrayal.
Below are several articles dedicated to diversity and inclusion, which I contributed to by editing, designing, or writing myself. To me, journalism is about amplifying voices that are often overlooked, and I take great pride in guiding Imua to uphold and share this same commitment.
